Principal’s Panorama
Here are some thoughts from my ‘panoramic view’ of the school. This is such a different wonderful beginning of the year! Last year was our first one as a K-5 school. There were lots of changes to routines and procedures for staff and students. This year though, the kids are settling into the routines and rigor, making new friends, and are getting deeper into the learning. As we adults move into the fall season, fill out our calendars, make dates for meetings, and hurry and scurry, here is a reminder to us all.
Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world at once, but of stretching out
to mend the part of the world that is within our reach.
Clarissa Pinkola Estes
This great bit of advice reminds me that we should never be too busy to tie a shoe, wipe a tear, chat with kids, and get to know one child a bit more every day. Everything does not need to be solved at once, but if we are doing our best every day, then we are taking care of the things within our reach. If we all take a deep collective breath, and keep the kids and their learning in front of us, then we will stretch out to meet those objectives.
Respectfully,
Polly

Human Growth and Development
Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents,
An informational meeting will be held in the gym at Village School on Monday, Oct. 29, from 5-7 p.m. regarding the Growth and Development classes (puberty education) offered to fourth and fifth grade students as part of the Health Curriculum in Gorham schools. The meeting will only take about 15-20 minutes for fourth grade parents, followed by approximately another hour for fifth grade parents to give them time to view the videos used in fifth grade classes. All of the handouts and materials used in classes will be available for you to review.
This is the same program that has been offered for the past 15 years in Gorham (except for the updated videos) and will be offered in all fourth and fifth grade classes at Great Falls, Village and Narragansett schools. The parent meeting will ONLY be held at Village this year.
Students are strongly encouraged to bring home their packet of handouts for you to review with them and to help with their homework (in fifth grade) in order to facilitate discussion with you.
Please contact Mrs. Chasse with any questions at 222-1260.

Why is Reading Important?
By Jaela Boucher
Why is reading important? It is important to read because if you couldn’t read, you couldn’t read a book. You couldn’t even read a newspaper or school paper.
What is your favorite book? Mine is
Magic Treehouse: Dolphins at Daybreak!
Thank you to those who have supplied puzzles and games for indoor recess!
Please keep those box tops coming! The money we receive from this program goes right back to our students in the way of supplies and other items.
Thank you for your help!
Raising the Flags at Narragansett School
By: Jordan Blakeslee, Michael Darasz, Josh Labrie, and Cassidy Rioux
At the beginning of our school year, Chuck Bellantoni came in and trained the 4th grade flag raisers from Mr. and Mrs. Small’s classes about flag etiquette. First, we learned the proper way to hold and fold the flag. It has to be folded in a special way with all of the stars facing up.
We also learned that our flag has 50 stars which represent our states, and 13 stripes, which represent our original colonies. The flag is raised to half-mast whenever someone important has died. More importantly, we learned that we must respect and handle the flag carefully.
The flag is raised every morning at the beginning of school, and taken down each day before dismissal time. We put up the American Flag first and then the State of Maine flag. Our school has two sets of flags; one to use on sunny days, and another to use on rainy days.
We enjoy having the responsibility of raising and lowering the flags each day. We alternate this job each week between our classes. We would like to thank Mr. Bellantoni for teaching us about our flag, as well as training us in how best to do this important job.
This year’s flag raisers are: Jordan Blakeslee, Michael Darasz, Josh Labrie, Cassidy Rioux, Julia Edwards, Griffin Loranger, Gwen Miramontes, and Delaney Seed.

“Kids’ Klubsâ€
Do you knit, crochet, tie knots, or have an interest in something that is kid friendly? Do you play cards, love sports, enjoy nature, make crafts, or scrapbook? Or could you supervise an activity such as building with Legos or putting puzzles together? We are looking for a few adults who would volunteer for an after school Klub on Tuesdays. Your group can be large or small, can be for older or younger kids, or open to all 1st thru 5th graders. It is your choice.
This year our first 6-week session begins on October 16th and ends on November 20th. We need volunteers as soon as possible. Please let us know if you can make yourself available for 6 Tuesdays to have fun with kids! Sara Kaufman will be the Kids’ Klubs Coordinator this year. You may call or email her at csmskaufman@yahoo.com or 839-5548. Thanks in advance for your contribution to the Narragansett community!
