Dear Narragansett Community,
I am writing to let you know about an opportunity that has come our way. We are at an exciting time and place in education—in the country, in the state, and in Gorham. With a new law from the legislature, LD 1422, we will now be focused on getting kids to proficiency in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA), and in the Maine Learning Results for other major content areas.
The Maine Department of Education’s website, http://www.maine.gov/doe/, entitled Getting to Proficiency, explains the goal for Maine students in this way: All Maine students learn in a proficiency-based model that allows them to move at their own pace and advance when they have mastered learning outcomes.
At K-5 across the district, teachers have spent the last two years aligning the standards with our reading and math programs, determining what assessments they will use, and what meets the standard in each of the assessments, so that we can report your child’s progress to you via report cards. All of this work puts us in a great place to take the next step.
At Narragansett, we are currently having staff discussions about how we can best help kids along the continuum of standards in grades three, four, and five. We have a great team of teachers here who care very deeply about doing a good job while working with your children. I have every confidence we will develop a plan that will move us toward proficiency in your child’s best interest. As soon as we have more specific information, we will share it with you.
As a district, we are planning Parent Forums for K-5 families to learn more about proficiency-based education. I hope you will attend one of these. Information will be out soon with the dates and times. As always, if you have more questions for me, please do not hesitate to call or email.
Sincerely,
Polly Brann
