Dear Parents of Incoming Kindergarteners,
Welcome to Kindergarten! Here is some information for you as we close this school year and prepare for the 2011-2012 school year. We look forward to meeting you and your children!
Next school year, we will have five kindergarten teachers for a total of ten half-day sessions. Narragansett will have one teacher with one AM and one PM session. Village and Great Falls will have two teachers; each will have an AM and a PM session. The morning session runs from 9:00-11:30 and the afternoon session runs from 12:30-3:00. Bus routes and times for bus pick up will be listed on the Gorham website and in the Gorham Times in August. www.gorhamschools.org
We have placed your Kindergarten child in a class based on your home location. Enclosed is a letter telling you which school, which session, and which teacher your child will have. Your child will remain in the same AM or PM session for the duration of the school year. Come meet the teacher and classmates on Wednesday, June 15th !
In Gorham for 2011-2012, grades K, six, and nine will begin school on Monday, August 29th. These students will be entering their respective schools for the first time. For Kindergarten we call this “Kindergarten Orientation.” We will host the incoming K students and parent(s) at their respective schools on the 29th from 9:00-9:45 for the AM class, and 11:00-11:45 for the PM class. Parents will need to bring their children to school. Please mark your calendars to see classmates, the teacher and staff, have a short bus ride, and play on the playground! Please find a supply list of items to send in to school with your child.
Also enclosed is a brochure that tells how you can help your child get ready for Kindergarten during the summer. It lists some of the skills that you can practice. Baxter Library has Literacy Kits for you to check out, take home and enjoy with your child as well as tons of books in the ChildrenĂs Room.
“Current research on early literacy and brain development indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. Parents of newborns, toddlers and preschoolers have the critical role as their children's first teacher. These literacy kits will provide hands-on activities for parent and child to work and play together on early reading skills and will be available to circulate for three-week periods. For more information please call 839-5031” --Baxter Memorial Library
The North Gorham Library has a summer story hour for kids as well. We encourage you to take advantage of these special local resources.
Finally, we welcome our parent community as partners. It is in your childĂs best interest to work together to be as successful as possible. We encourage you to attend our Partners In Education monthly meetings at your school. P.I.E. serves as a parent forum, as a venue to promote school activities, and as a place to meet other parents. We are looking forward to the beginning of our journey together!
Respectfully,
