Dear Families,
Welcome back (almost)! I hope you have had a relaxing, peaceful summer, and have had time to accomplish some things you had on your list. I have become addicted to the Olympics…what a humbling event! It is amazing what world-class athletes do to prepare for the games while the rest of the world goes to "work." We have a lot to be proud of in the USA! Here are a few tidbits of information for you…
A warm welcome to new Kindergarten and new first thru fifth graders! We will do all we can to help you transition to Narragansett School. We are a small (student enrollment as of 8/7 is 252) and friendly school and are passionate about and committed to a successful journey for all. Please let us know how we can help you settle in. Welcome back to our returning friends!
Mrs. Hawkes, the Admin Assistant, and Mrs. Packard, the School Secretary will be back to work on the 15th of August. If you have a question or a concern and can't wait until then, please give me a call or send an email and I'll do what I can to help, or steer you in the right direction. ( :
Here is some staffing information. We will have:
- One session each of AM and PM Kindergarten with Mrs. Wright;
- Two first grade classes with Mrs. Kenny and Mrs. O'Donnell;
- Two second grades with Mrs. D-H and Ms. Gagnon;
- Three third grades with Mrs. McKeen, Mr. Penley, and new this year, Mrs. Burns;
- Two fourth grades with Mr. and Mrs. Small;
- Two fifth grades with Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Adolf;
- The same specialists for Art, Music, PE, and Library/Tech;
- The same kitchen staff;
- Mostly the same support staff for extra help with academics, social/emotional, and/or physical issues.
Mrs. Burns, our new third grade teacher, and her family have lived in Gorham for several years; her two daughters went through K-2 here. Ms. Tardif will be our new school Social Worker. She has completed a successful year at Great Falls; we will be sharing her with them. The Functional Life Skills Special Education program will return to Narragansett as a K-5 program. Mrs. Connolly and her staff were located at Village last year. Welcome to the newcomers and welcome back to everyone!
You should be hearing within the next couple of weeks from your child's teacher. S/he will give you a warm welcome, details of the schedule, upcoming events, and a list of school supplies. I will also include school wide events at the bottom of this letter.
Gorham Public Works has been busy on the school property. When school opens, the entrance from Route 25 will be for buses only, and between the hours of 7:30 and 4:00 will become known as the Bus Loop. We will not be able to get to the staff parking lot from the Bus Loop/Route 25.
The rest of us - staff and parents - will enter from Chick Road, which is the new road created last year that runs past the police/fire departments and connects Rt. 25 with Rt. 202. Staff will park in the "usual" parking lot, which will have new light poles and paving, and new line striping and traffic markings. The former "walkway" from the municipal parking lot to the staff parking lot will be widened for cars. Parents dropping off children in the mornings will continue to use this area (staff parking lot) as a drive thru. A sidewalk to accommodate those who need to park in the municipal lot behind the fire/police building and walk to the school is being added. Please continue to use the front door of the school for coming and going. These features will help with traffic flow and
safety.
Inside the building, the gym and locker rooms, the library and small conference room, storage rooms, the office area, clinic, and staff kitchen were painted, which completes the work begun last summer. Everything looks clean and wonderful! A mechanical service company is currently installing new air ducts all over the building. Rooms will be cleaned once the ceiling work has been completed. We will be on a tight time schedule, but will be ready for school to open on time!
Here's hoping you can enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Kids, be sure to read and do some math every day--lots of exciting science happening too with the Mars landing. We will see you in a short while.
Respectfully, Mrs. Brann
